We are very sorry to inform that Professor Akinori Sarai passed away on July 17, 2013. We would like to express our sympathy and condolences to him and his family. He has devoted himself to the advances in education and research on bioinformatics at Kyushu Institute of Technology (Kyutech). He published 235 papers and established the Asian Bioinformatics Research and Education Network (ABREN) in 2004 to activate the interdisciplinary research on Biosciences and Bioinformatics and to make friendships with Asian scientists. He created the world-famous database of "BioInfoBank", and an e-learning system called "e-Bio".

For over 10 years, Professor Sarai and we have been extensively applying informatics, chemistry and bioscience to medical engineering, biotechnology and biology. We aim directly at contributing to drug design/development; disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment; and patient care/welfare, while reducing their economic costs. We intend to establish a center of excellence in Asia that collaborates with medical schools, hospitals, companies, and the government.

To realize his and our goal to activate the international education and research of bioinformatics, we would like to hold the second BMIRC international conference together with the memorial symposium of Professor Akinori Sarai, with the Research Center for Bio-microsensing Technology (RCBT) and the Japanese Society for Bioinformatics.
